Getting a well exposed image of a black dog in white snow is a bit tricky. Since Sonic was the main subject of the picture I wanted to make sure that he was properly exposed rather than capturing all the detail of the snow.
My camera was underexposing Sonic because he was surround by so much white. So I had to figure out how to make the camera let more light in to make the exposure correct for the subject. There are three ways this can be done. You can set the camera to a slower shutter speed or you can change the aperture. I decided to change the aperture because Sonic tends to move quickly and I didn't want him to have a motion blur. You can also achieve what I did by using exposure compensation. On this particular image I would have had to use about +1 exposure compensation.
